Seth's Squad
How Seth's Squad Supports Pediatric Cancer Families Through Community
"Because our community carried us through, we are now in a position to carry other families facing childhood cancer."
The Backstory
When four-year-old Seth Walsh was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2018, his family created a Facebook group called "Seth's Squad" to share his journey. What began as a personal support network has since grown into a nonprofit that provides comprehensive support to pediatric cancer families throughout Kentucky.
Named after Seth's medical port—which he affectionately called "Stormtrooper"—Seth's Squad now serves as a stormtrooper squad of supporters for countless families navigating childhood cancer. The organization understands firsthand how isolating a diagnosis can be and works to bridge that gap by bringing caregivers together and offering practical support.
From Personal Experience to Community Support
Seth's treatment journey included multiple rounds of chemotherapy, two bone marrow transplants, and clinical trials across three children's hospitals. Throughout it all, his family witnessed the power of community support.
"Friends and family showed up for us in countless ways, from meals and childcare to prayers and encouragement," Seth's mother recalls. "Their love allowed us to focus fully on Seth's care."
This experience inspired them to create an organization that could provide similar support to other families. Today, Seth's Squad offers several key programs:
· Hospital care bags filled with essential items for families receiving a new diagnosis
· Outpatient carts stocked with toys, snacks, and activities to brighten treatment days
· Online support groups facilitated by pediatric oncology professionals
· Family outings that allow pediatric oncology families to connect and create joyful memories
· Blood drives that help address critical shortages (Seth received over 225 transfusions during his treatment)
Support Their Mission
The most meaningful way to support Seth's Squad is through their website sethssquad.org or their Amazon wish lists. The organization also welcomes volunteers for their community events and emphasizes that no gesture is too small—sometimes even a simple text or note can remind a family that they're not fighting alone.
Now in remission and celebrating three years cancer-free, Seth's legacy continues through an organization that proves personal tragedy can transform into community triumph. As their website states: "Seth's story is a testament to the power of resilience, innovative medical care, and the unbreakable bond of family and community."
